About the MAC Address Lookup
MAC Address Lookup identifies the hardware manufacturer behind a network device by decoding the OUI (Organizationally Unique Identifier), the first three bytes of its MAC address. The IEEE assigns these prefixes to vendors, so the tool tells you whether an adapter is made by Apple, Cisco, Intel, or another company. It is useful for inventorying devices, spotting rogue hardware, and troubleshooting network access.
How to use
- Enter a MAC address in any common format, such as colon or hyphen separated.
- Click Lookup to decode the OUI prefix.
- Read the manufacturer name returned for the device.
Frequently asked questions
- What is an OUI?
- The Organizationally Unique Identifier is the first 24 bits of a MAC address. The IEEE assigns each OUI to a specific manufacturer.
- Why does the vendor not match the device brand?
- Many companies buy network chipsets from other vendors, so the OUI may reflect the chip maker, such as a Wi-Fi module supplier, rather than the final product brand.
- Can a MAC address be randomized?
- Yes. Modern phones and laptops often use randomized MAC addresses for privacy, in which case the OUI may not map to a real vendor.
