About the Ping
The Ping tool measures round-trip latency and packet loss between this server and a target host, streaming each reply live as it arrives. It sends successive probes and reports response times so you can gauge connection quality and stability. This is the classic first step for diagnosing whether a host is up and how responsive the path to it is.
How to use
- Enter the hostname or IP address you want to ping.
- Click Start to begin sending probes.
- Watch each reply and its latency stream in live.
- Review the summary for average latency and packet loss.
Frequently asked questions
- What does latency tell me?
- Round-trip latency is the time for a probe to reach the host and return, measured in milliseconds. Lower is better; spikes suggest congestion or distance.
- What is packet loss?
- Packet loss is the percentage of probes that received no reply. Consistent loss points to a network problem along the path.
- Why can a host not respond to ping but still work?
- Some hosts and firewalls block ICMP echo requests for security, so a no-reply result does not always mean the host is down.
